A day in my life: Sunday August 8, 2010

Thoughts:
Well I guess you all can’t wait to hear how I did on my 11K run? I didn’t!

I’m ashamed to say I didn’t run it this morning. I woke up not feeling well at all but I did put on my running clothes. Then I noticed it was raining, this wasn’t helping. I did go out for that run but had to turn around and go home after 5 minutes. My throat was hurting and I couldn’t breath well, no way I was going to get a run in today.

This was week 7 of the training plan and the last two weeks my runs haven’t been to my satisfaction. I decided for that reason to take a step back and start over with week 6 tomorrow. This means I complete the training by the end of February 2011 which is fine because I don’t want to run a half at the earliest in April next year.

The plan is 28 weeks and those of you who can do their maths quickly will know that it’s not 28 weeks till February. That’s correct but I will do some weeks twice because I have also planned 5 runs in a weekend. Those weekends I won’t do my scheduled long run.

This decision feels right for me and no worries: that 11K will be run by me, only not today.

The final countdown:

Friday

Breakfast: Soft curd cheese vanilla, gingerbread, strawberries and an orange.

Morning snack: a small muesli bread.

Lunch: a soft roll with farmer salad, a salad, mustard soup and a glass of milk (no picture, working).

Afternoon snack: an apple

Dinner: Thai soup with mushrooms, red pepper, cucumber, bean sprouts, green curry paste, 1 spoon coconut milk and chicken stock. Marcelle asked if I could add calories of the meals, I will do that if I don’t forget. This meal was 170 calories based on the ingredients which I all measured on my kitchen scale.

170 calories

Evening: Because my dinner was so low in calories I was very hungry and had some dark chocolate (70% cacao), I had a small cake and a small glass of wine.

Calories: 1575 (goal 1500-1700).
Calories burned:
none (daily exercise not counted)
Notes: Dinner has to have more calories to avoid snacking later in the evening. It was better if I ate some bread with my soup.

Saturday

Breakfast: Bread with scrambled eggs (1 egg) and a non-fat yogurt drink (lime)

406 calories

Morning snack: nothing.

Lunch: toast of 2 slices of bread, ham and cheese, an apple and a few strawberries, a glass of milk.

430 calories

Afternoon snack: dark chocolate (70%) and a small glass of red wine before dinner.

Dinner: Foccaccia with roast beef, an omelette of 2 eggs with green vegetables. 580 calories.

580 calories

Evening snack: dark chocolate (70%) and a small glass of red wine.

Calories: 1809 (goal 1500-1700).
Calories burned:
none (daily exercise not counted)
Notes: Although I did get over my daily calorie goal I’m satisfied with this day. Except for some chocolate I didn’t snack anything else where I usually snack too much on a Saturday night.

Movie review:
This it it

As a teenager I was a big fan of Michael Jackson. I had (still have) all of his records, posters on the walls of my bedroom and scrapbooks with photo’s and articles. Through the years I got interested in other music but I kept liking his music. How he changes as a person through the years with his strange habits didn’t bother me much, he still was a great performer. I was lucky enough to see a concert of him once. That was back in 1996 when he was doing the History tour and came to Holland for two concerts. It was fantastic, what a performer and what a show, one of the best I’ve ever seen.

I was in shock when I heard about his death in June last year. I couldn’t believe it. I didn’t go to this movie when it showed in the theatres but watched it yesterday. They said when he died that he was ill, addicted to pain killers. But I didn’t see anything of that watching him in this movie. He still was the great performer I’ve seen back in 1996. Sure a bit older but he still did know how to entertain.

I didn’t have tickets for the show in London last year, at the time they were on sale my budget didn’t allow to buy the tickets but I think if he had lived it would have been a fantastic show and I would have regret it that I didn’t have a ticket.

  1. Hey ik heb je zopas een mail gestuurd – we zitten vaak op hetzelfde moment op de pc! Geen erg voor de gemiste 11km – je hebt nog veel tijd!

  2. Holy cow, that omelet looks good!!! Too bad about your run, but when you are not feeling well, the last thing you need to do is push yourself physically. Hope you are not getting really sick! Maybe just allergies versus a summer cold?

I’d rent that movie – MJ had his demons, but he really was a musical genius and it would be nice to see him in action.

  3. And here I was thinking of you this morning when we girls headed out for our 9km run in the forest..I wondered how you were doing as I was not feeling it when I started…both yesterday and today, but once out and going I was okay….the girls said I was in a bad mood today!! I was feeling so tired…and not in the mood for conversation at all….
Today I am finished…its been 11 days straight of training without a break….tomorrow I am going to sleep in late and catch up as too miserable from being tired.

You listened to your body which is good….I admire you…I have to learn to do that still…

Great meals and I’m happy to see you keeping to this task…when is weigh in day??

Love Micheal Jackson as well…have not see this movie but on my to do list as have heard its brilliant and you see him as a real person.

  4. I agree with Shelley, it’s better to rest for a day if you’re not feeling well. Hope you won’t get sick.

  5. Rest days are important and training plans really can be flexible. You don’t have to feel like you failed if you alter them some. I like how you are giving yourself permission to repeat weeks. Making training fit your schedule and your abilities is really, really important!

  6. Glad you are listening to your body! That food looks yummy!

  7. sometimes we just need to listen to our bodies like I said to Marcelle, and then we just come back that much stronger. When you are that tierd and not feeling well there is no point in pushing it because you just end up feeling worse.
You’ll make up for it I know you will.
All your meals look so yummy especially that omlette!

  8. I think you are wise to just listen to what is best for your body. I would have made the same decision. Your food looks amazing!

  9. Hi Fran,
Sometimes our bodies just need rest and know when it is time to turn around. Get better first then worry about getting out on the run. Sometimes when I am not feeling the best I make myself go on a walk. That way I am not totally pushing my body but I am still getting some type of workout in:)

That Thai soup looks wonderful:) It makes me hungry for Thai food….it has been months! Happy Monday Fran!

  10. I am glad to hear that you are listening to your body. Better then getting sicker. The soup looks so yummy!!

  11. I love seeing the food pictures.

Sorry you didn’t get your run in this time, but when you are not feeling well it certainly is best to get your rest. Hope you are feeling much better.

  12. I think it’s good that you listened to your body and took a rest. And typically by taking that rest day you will have more energy and feel more fresh the next time you run. So cheers to that! Did you like the MJ movie? I LOVED it! I saw it opening night at the theatres! It felt like you were actually in a MJ concert!

  13. I’m glad you are not worried about the 11k. I know you will do it, you are one of the most dedicated people I know. And thank you so much for reminding me that you’ll have my back when I finally get back in the saddle. I will need all the help I can get. 🙂

  14. Good that you listened to your body, took the day off, and you will come back stronger. Get better soon! I am loving your meals.

  15. Hi! Thanks for stopping by my blog. I’m looking forward to reading yours now. Very exciting that you are thinking of doing a half next spring. I’ll definitely let you know when we start another round. I figured doing it in groups of people is the only way I’d be able to keep up with it, plus it would allow everyone to follow each other’s journey the easiest.

  16. great job listening to your body

  17. I found your blog through Higher Miles blog. Way to go in training for a half! I am training for my first full now.
