A day in my life: Monday February 14, 2011

Thoughts:
Saturday was a great day! It was so much fun to work with my colleagues in a different place then we normally do. It also was a long day, I left at 7.15 am and got home at 7.30 pm. Saturday night I did nothing more than sit on the couch with my book and a glass of wine. My feet and legs were killing me of standing and walking all day. Here’s a pic of me with my two favourite male colleagues.

Friday afternoon I got the results back from the doctor about my stomach. There’s nothing wrong with me. That’s a relief of course but I still have had some problems last week. The doctor gave me the advice to watch my food, eat enough fibres, exercise (which I already do of course) and get enough sleep. And if it happens again: find out what I’ve eaten before. My intestines might be irritable and there’s nothing to do about it, only try to live as healthy as possible.

I’ve been writing down my food in a notebook for over a week now and also write down when I go to the bathroom. I’ve had troubles with my stomach twice: today and Tuesday last week and on both days I had a salad for lunch. The other days I didn’t eat a salad at lunch and didn’t have troubles.

Guess I must not eat that at lunch anymore. I’m going to keep writing down my food for a couple of weeks to find out if there is other food that causes problems.

Exercise:
Today I had to do my speedwork run. I had to run 11.2K (7 miles) and do 3 times 1.6K (1 mile). It was hard, I always find speedwork the hardest run to do. The first 3K my right leg was really hurting, at 4K I thought about turning around but then I had to run the same way back and I don’t like running the same road twice and I kept going. After that my leg was fine but I had trouble breathing and finding the right pace and I stopped a lot during the run and wanted to quit so many times. I kept telling myself to go on and I did. Now a couple of hours later I’m happy I didn’t give up.

Stats:
Weather: dry, not much wind, 9C (48 degrees)
Distance: 11.2 K / 7 miles
Time: 01:16:55
Average time: 6:52 /km
Average speed: 8.7 km/hour

  1. I don’t know where you’re getting your greens for your salad but based on what has happened a lot here in the USA, I would suspect the greens being contaminated. I once read that if you get a bit of upset stomach after eating it’s not always aversion to the food, it’s sometimes a mild case of food poisoning. I’m not saying that is what is going on with you, I’m just sharing.

Great job on your speed work!

  2. What type of lettuce are you using in your salad? I have some friends here that have trouble with iceberg lettuce. Their doctors say it’s really hard for a person to digest…and sometimes results in stomach issues.

Great pace on your 7 mile run!!!!!!!!!!

  3. I’m glad there is nothing medically wrong with you, but that’s frustrating to not really have a good answer. Hope you get to the bottom of this soon.

Cute picture of you and your coworkers – love the shirt colors!!!

I have the hardest time with speedwork, too. Nice job completing it. 🙂

  4. Great job on your long run! 🙂
I love that you seem to eat a lot of sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, and sausage- yum! I had missed your daily dinners.
Love the pic of you working. That blue shirt really makes your eyes pop!

  5. Glad to hear there is nothing wrong with you. But still, it’s frustrating when you don’t feel well and can’t easily find an answer why. Hope you can figure it out soon. No fun!

Good job pushing through that run. I need to find that determination again.

And thanks for your offer. 🙂 That WOULD be fun, impossible any time soon, but fun.

  6. Glad there is nothing wrong with you! I hate speedwork too. I’m due to do some tomorrow but may push it off until Weds. I stayed home sick today and def. don’t have a lot of energy.

  7. Happy to see there is nothing wrong and that by tracking your food you just may get to whatever the culprit is and then you just eliminate it from your diet.

    I love sauerkraut!!!

Great pic of you and your colleagues!

  8. While it is good that they didn’t find anything medically wrong, it is still irritating to be without a real answer.

Some foods bother my stomach that are surprising to me. I cannot have iced tea that comes out of a soda fountain – the kind made from concentrated syrup. It sends me running to the bathroom. Kind of weird.

I actually am not too surprised that raw salads might cause you tummy troubles. Roughage can be really hard for some people.

  9. Speedwork is really hard – great job on keeping it up for 7 miles!

  10. Hi Fran,
So you are skeptical of my magical bracelet, eh? I’m not 🙂

    You dinners look great.

    Go to Delft. It’s beautiful.

  11. I can only imagine how sore your feet and back must have been on Saturday evening. But still, you do great for others. Good for you.

  12. I’m so glad to hear that there is nothing wrong with your stomach and do wonder what salad has that causes this….I see my hubby is having stomach problems after eating cauliflower….

Well done on your weeks training, you did really well.

  13. Salad, huh? It could be all the fiber. Or something on it, like Helen mentioned above. Do you buy it prewashed in a bag, all ready to eat? It could be some product they put on it as a preservative.
My favorite salad right now is “spitskool”, sliced very thin and massaged with some sea salt and apple cider vinegar – yum! Lots of vitamin C and super healthy.
So glad you had a good time at the Gamma on Saturday – looks like a fun bunch of colleagues!

  14. Good job on running your 7 miles! I just ran my first 7 miles since the marathon and it was hard, but felt soooo good! So proud of you Fran. And I’m sorry to hear about your stomach trouble. I have a friend who cannot eat lettuce because she is allergic to the pesticides that lettuce is sprayed with. Ps. Loved your outfit of the day! 🙂

  15. Awesome job!
    Great miles & food!!

    Amazing!!

  16. What a beautiful photo of you and your colleagues!
Glad There is nothing wrong with you! Those are good news 🙂 Moreover you had good time on Saturday with your colleagues.

I love Grilled chicken! Red onion? It’s an italian product!

Congrats on your hard speedwork run! As soon as you come in Italy I’ll show you the typical vegetation of Mediterranean shrub and we’ll run through that landscape.

I hope you’ll have a good training again!
