Wednesday October 24, 2012: Car troubles

Daily stuff:

I’m writing this post a 8.30 am at home while I should have been at work by now. When I left for work this morning and I took the first turn, I heard a loud noise and it sounded like something broke. My heartbeat was sky high because it scared the you know what out of me.
I immediately turned around home. The garage wasn’t open yet and I waited a while before I drove there very slowly. They looked what happened and a spring was broken at the front of my left tire. Fortunately they can fix it right away and my car will be ready at 11 am and I’ll go to work then. It’s going to cost me money but driving safely is more important.

Poor Bella has fleas. She has been scratching herself a lot the past couple of days and at the doggy day care yesterday they said that a lot of dogs had fleas at the moment. So I bought a flea comb after work and checked her and she had them too. I washed her after dinner and treated her with an anti flea medication, changed all her blankets for clean ones and hopefully this helps. For the next couple of weeks I will be vacuuming the house more often. It is weird though that she got them though because I give her anti flea medication every month.

Good old Shred on the menu for Tuesday morning, level 1. I love this workout, it’s hard but short.
Total time: 27 minutes.

I have so much trouble to get up and go out for a run on work days. It’s the dark that’s holding me back and so far I have been skipping the weekday runs. I just don’t seem to get over this, last year I didn’t have this much trouble to go out for early dark morning runs but this year I do. I’m glad I do 2 of the 3 runs on the weekend when it’s light but I have to get over this and start doing that weekday run too.

Sunday dinner

I had rolled chicken meat in the freezer for a while now and I baked that on Sunday. We ate it with a pepper sauce and baked potatoes. I also made roasted carrots with a little honey.

Monday dinner

Noodles with pak-choi cabbage and beef tenderloin.

TV shows I watched last week
True Blood, Parenthood, Rizzoli & Isles, Mad Men, Game of Thrones, Grey’s Anatomy.

Wednesday October 17, 2012: Will this show in your reader?

Daily stuff:
New try, hopefully this post will show up in Google Reader and Blogrolls. My post last Monday failed to show up but I can’t find any errors. Not at my web host and not at WordPress that I use for blogging.

The concert Saturday was great, brought back all 80’s music memories. There were 4 guests artists who were all big here inHollandin the 80’s and they rewrote a song to a rap song and had a rap artist that’s very popular these days to sing it with them.  I did make some photos but when I looked at them on my computer they were all failures.

There was a bummer however. We followed directions to a parking lot when we entered the city, which meant we were in traffic jam for an hour and a half. By the time we finally got to the parking lot it was full and we were directed back to the stadium where the concert was. When we arrived there, suddenly we could park on the parking lot there which meant we had to walk only a minute or 2 to get in. But by that time it was almost 9 pm and the concert started at 8 and we missed some of it. This was really badly organized and a lot of people were late for the concert because of that. Everytime we got to a concert in this stadium we have troubles getting there and we decided we won’t go to a concert there anymore. It’s not worth the irritation and the little loss of money because you missed a bit.

I complained at the stadium where the concert was held and today I received an email that I could get 2 new tickets for the concert next Saturday with a VIP parking ticket. We’re not going to use them but I was surprised that they took the time to reply to me and offer me 2 new tickets. Very good service!

I took a vacation day today. I had to do some deep cleaning upstairs, something I postponed and postponed. I cleaned the bathroom, our bedroom, both our studies and the addict. It took me over 5 hours to complete it. I worked very hard and the result is worth it but I’m very tired right now.

This photo I posted Monday too of Bella: the little diva wants to lay on the couch no matter what …

Book I’m reading

George R.R. Martin
A Song of Fire and Ice – Book 4 AFeast for Crows

TV shows I watched last week

The Mentalist, Mad Men, Dallas, Private Practice, Rookie Blue, Game of Thrones, Grey’s Anatomy.

First episode of the new season of Grey’s. And although I already knew what was going to happen: WTF Mark Sloan dead? I cried a lot this episode.

Monday August 20, 2012: Bella’s beach adventure

Daily stuff:

Friday I got a new phone. I’ve had a Blackberry for the past 2 years and I could renew my contract which included a new phone. I have compared the Iphone 4 and the Samsung Galaxy SIII and after research I have chosen the Samsung and I’m so happy with it. It’s got so much more possibilities than my Blackberry.

Last Friday my boss turned 50. It was my day off but 50 is a special birthday and I live a 10 minute drive from home. So I went to the office in the afternoon to celebrate. He had petit fours and Prosecco to celebrate and appreciated it that I came back for him my day off.

Petit fours and Prosecco

We had a heatwave last week with temperatures close to 100 degrees yesterday. It was the hottest day of the century and the hottest day since 1994 and I hated every minute of it.

You know by now I don’t do well in the heat and I spend most of the weekend in the back of the garden where I could sit in the shadow but even that was too hot. Everything I did made me sweat and I did not much more than sit and play with my new phone. What a waisted weekend.

The only fun part of the weekend was that we went to the dog beach with Bella yesterday morning. This is a normal beach where dogs are allowed. Almost every beach inHollanddogs are forbidden during the Summer months. At this beach there were only dog lovers. There were already so many dogs and they all had so much fun playing in the water. Bella was a bit scared at first (it was her second time at the beach) but after a while she dared to go further and swam a lot. After a while we noticed she was getting tired and it was very hot at that time and we went home where she slept the entire afternoon.

Note: this will probably be the first and last time you see photos of me in a bathing suit 🙂 It’s exceptional I even wear it and I usually don’t want R. to take photo’s of me in it.

Waiting for the bridge, lots of boats on the water

Are you sitting down? Because I’m going to drop a bomb now.

After weeks of thinking about it I have decided to give up on the half marathon and start my running adventure all over again. It was a hard decision because it feels like a failure. There are a few reasons why I have decided this:

  • For the past months I hated running more than I loved it. Almost every time I had a run planned I had to fight myself to go (especially at the long runs) and I’ve skipped more runs because of that than I wanted.
  • I haven’t made progress in the 3 years that I’m running. In fact my runs were better the first 1.5 years that I was running. My times got slower instead of a little bit faster.
  • When I started Start to Run for a 5K and after that a 10K I could run the entire distances without walking. These days I hardly make it through a mile after which I have to walk.
  • I think I have jumped from one distance to the next too fast. After every completed distance I immediately moved on to the next instead of getting familiar to a certain distance.

I want my joy in running back. I want to run a 10K without walk breaks. I want to run faster and don’t be the last person to finish in a race (inEuroperunners that participate in races are fast, if you finish a 5K in over 35 minutes for example, you are one of the last to come in).

So what’s the plan?

I’m starting with an adjusted C25K/Start to run plan. This is a 7 week plan after which I should run a 5K without walking. Because there are a lot of walk breaks the first weeks, I will also work on running the run parts faster than I usually do. I’m going to work hard on this. If I, for whatever reason, don’t feel comfortable after a week, I will do the same week again.

After those 7 weeks I will do one of two 5K’s to see if I have improved but more important, running it without walking. After that I’m starting a 14 week plan to run a 10K without walking. I will also do a few 10K races after that.

By the time I’m finished with these 2 steps it’s around February and I haven’t made my mind up what I’m going to do next. I do know already that the next training cycle will be for a 15K but it might be that I’m going to run 10K’s for a couple of months first.

At this moment I don’t know yet if I ever will run a half marathon, it all depends how the new plan works out. If I do it won’t be before Autumn 2013 or even Spring 2014.

I don’t expect you to understand this decision but for me it feels good. I felt a big relief after I had the courage to make this decision

Wednesday August 8, 2012: Epke for president

Daily stuff:

Our little country is doing well at the Olympics. Our swimmer Ranomi Kromowidjojo won a gold medal at the 100 and50 metersfreestyle. We had a bronze medal at judo and a bronze medal for the rowing women at the boat with 8 (no idea how this is called in English), silver at sailing, gold at windsurfing, silver at the team show jumping, bronze at the dressage. And did you see Usian Bolt at the100 meters? AMAZING!

But Epke, oh Epke, our flying Dutchman. Gold at the horizontal bar and boy it was unbelievable, amazing and so impressive. He deserved that gold medal. He’s our first individual Olympic medalist. If you haven’t seen it, it’s worth to watch it. You only have to watch the first minute. He did a combination of 3 exercises in a row, there’s only 1 person in the world who can do that and that’s Epke. The comment is in Dutch but you can hear the how extatic the commentator is.

You may have read my FB post about my sad day yesterday. I have told before on this blog that the girlfriend of my colleague had cancer. I know her too because she once was a colleague of mine, they met at work. She was clean last year but during my vacation they found out the cancer was back and that there was nothing to be done about it. It had spread through her entire body. When I came back from vacation he was gone and has been taken care of her ever since. She was home but got worse and worse every week. Monday afternoon her body gave up and she passed away, 36 years old. Sometimes life is so unfair.

The funeral is Saturday afternoon and a lot of my colleagues and I will be there to pay our respects.

Bella did it again. Yesterday we noticed that her foot hurt. We couldn’t touch it and she kept licking it. We thought it would be a broken toenail again and this morning I called the vet. Luckily I could come this afternoon and she confirmed it: it was broken. This time it was the other side. I had to hold her while the vet would remove the nail. It was over in a second and she gave only a little scream and was okay immediately afterwards. She has a nice blue bandage that we can remove in a couple of hours.

Tonight I have a dinner date with my friend K. Due to busy schedules we haven’t seen each other for a while and I look forward to catching up with her.

Tuesday's walk with Bella

I did the run I had planned Monday yesterday but adjusted it a bit. In the past two weeks I hardly ran and decided I needed a short run without walk breaks to restart again and that’s exactly what I did.

Monday May 28, 2012: The Mishmash Edition

Daily stuff:

Tuesday was my birthday. We don’t celebrate it that huge since we turned 40 and for the past 2 years I didn’t celebrate it at all. But some things happened this past year. I have 3 people at work. One of them lost his wife to cancer. One of them has a girlfriend (she’s 33) that has cancer. And one of them is a girl I work with that recently got diagnosed with breast cancer, she’s 39. This made me realize (once again) that life is short and that you should celebrate the things in life that are worth celebrating and getting a year older in good health is one of them.

When I got to work, 2 of the guys I work with decorated my office.

My managers bought me flowers. R. and I don’t really exchange gifts but he knows I collect cook books and he saw one in the bookstore he thought I would like. It’s called (translated) “The Silver Spoon Tuscany” and got recipes from Tuscany in it. That adds another book to my cook book challenge. The book is one of a series of 4 and I have been thinking of buying them in the past. The book is beautiful illustrated and now (you know where I’m going right?) I want the other 3 too.

My Mom, MIL, my friend T. and her husband B. and another friend of mine M. came over for coffee with cake and some drinks at night. It was so nice outside, we sat on the terrace till 11 pm. By that time everyone except T. and B. had left and we called it a night because we all had to work the next morning.

Wednesday I treated my colleagues for my birthday. I did this together with a guy who had his birthday Friday so we could split the costs. I ordered 2 “Spakenburgs hart” at my bakery. This is a giant cookie that you can only buy in my village but everybody knows it and loves it. Personally I don’t and I didn’t have any (it’s made almost a 100% of butter). But it looks great, the text says “happy birthday”.

Friday Bella got a haircut. Her hair was very long and we noticed the heat bothered her a little because of all her hair. She’s now ready for Summer. I like it that you can see the different shades of brown again.

Yesterday we went to a forest we go to often. We went early before it would be to warm for Bella and it was lovely weather for a walk. They did some maintenance in the forest, it’s a forest they planted many years ago. The made a new pond but it’s going to take a while before it looks natural again.

Book I’m reading

Brian Freeman

After a couple of weeks of no reading I started a new book and I like it.  Almost finished it too.

TV shows I watched last week

The Big Bang Theory, Grey’s Anatomy, Revenge, Once upon a time, Touch, Mad Men.

Cross Stitching

This is what I worked on this weekend. The package is called Two Parrots. I will add a pic of how it will look when it’s finished from now on. This way you will have a better idea how it will look.

 Knitting update

I started with the front of the sweater yesterday and the progress I made isn’t really worth showing yet.

Monday April 30, 2012: The mishmash edition

Daily stuff:

Poor Bella. Friday I was playing with her with the ball and she seemed to step on something and walked with a limp for a few seconds. But this kept happening Friday and Saturday morning, everytime just for a few seconds. We couldn’t find anything and R. called the vet Saturday morning. Luckily he could come the same morning. I just came home from my run all wet and sweaty and had to shower first so I didn’t go with them.

The vet examined her and said she had a broken toenail and he had to rip it off. He could do it with a local anaesthesia but that would mean she would be sick all day. He said it would only take a minute and R. decided to do it without anaesthesia. He said she screamed and he didn’t like it at all but it was done quickly and after that Bella was fine again. The vet gave her a cool blue bandage and said the toe nail would grow again. I’m glad I wasn’t there because I’m a chicken and am sure it would have broken my heart to see her in pain.

She’s fine now, it doesn’t hurt anymore, it’s still a bit red but it’s not open. She’s back to her old self.

After weeks with temperatures colder than normal for this time of year and lots of rain, suddenly today was a gorgeous day with sunshine and temperatures of 24C (74 degrees). Finally no socks or panties and no coat when going out. I love it, especially since it is a national holiday and we didn’t have to work. We spent the day mostly at home, we did go out to a garden centre to buy some plants for our garden. Unfortunately it’s just 1 day because forecast tomorrow is again colder weather with rain.

TV shows I watched last week
Grey’s Anatomy, The Big Bang Theory, Once upon a time, Revenge, King, The Good Wife, 2 Broke Girls, Mad Men, The Mentalist.

I totally missed the start of Mad Men a few years ago on Dutch television and regretted it because it’s got such good critics. The movie channel that we have started airing this show from Season 1 and I watched the first episode and I like it a lot. Going to keep watching this one.

Friday April 27, 2012: The TGIF edition

First I want to thank you all for the lovely words and positive comments on my half marathon plan. Official training starts Monday and I look forward to it. I always love training for a certain goal.

I have a 4 day weekend. Today was my usual day off and on Monday it’s a national holiday because it’s Queen’s Day. There are festivities everywhere on Monday but we have no plans to go anywhere. R. is finishing his motor bike because his race season starts next weekend. But it’s nice to have 4 days off.

Today 2 years ago we drove 1.5 hours after dinner to watch a puppy Cairn Terrier. When we came home a few hours later we brought home Bella. I can’t believe she’s with us for 2 years already, time flies. She’s such a happy dog, she makes us smile every day. I’m glad we found her. She was the last one left, all the other puppies were gone 2 weeks earlier and I like to think that Bella has been waiting for us.

Knitting update

I finished the back of the vest. It looks a bit small but I have to iron and press it when everything is ready before I put it to one piece. Now two fronts and two sleeves left to go.

Have a great weekend!
