Friday October 5, 2012: Tennis groupie of retired tennis players

Daily stuff:

Yesterday was a big success, it was such a fun day. We started with a lunch followed by a presentation by Jacco Eltingh, former multiple grand slam winner in the doubles. He spoke about top sport related to work. It was very interesting. I admire everyone who is a professional sports men or woman, no matter what sports they do. They have to have so much self discipline to perform at such a high level. It was so interesting when he told about his professional career as a tennis player. Right now he’s a very succesful business man who owns 4 companies.

Did you know that an average top tennis player, plays about 3 matches a year without injuries? Every other match they have some kind of injury of pain but they don’t give in to that and keep going. It reminded me of Shelley and Helen, both have (or had) foot injuries but both didn’t give up. To me, they are top sporters too.

After that it was time for the first tennis match between Richard Kraijcek (Dutch tennis player, wonWimbledononce) and Carlos Moya (in 1990 he was in People’s list of 50 most beautiful men of the world and he still was handsome). Even though they are both retired, they still could play tennis at a high level. Kraijcek won the game.

After dinner I watch a double between Ramon Sluiter and Goran Ivanisevic (he’s funny and still hits the aces he’s famous for) and Mansour Bahrami and Paul Haarhuis (former partner of Jacco Eltingh). They had some jokes during the match which made it very fun to watch.

The last game between Ivan Lendl and Andrei Medvedev I passed and stayed in the hospitality unit.

During dinner Jacco Eltingh came to our hospitality unit with Richard Kraijcek and chatted with our guests for a while. One of the men kept saying I should ask them both if I could let my photo taken by him and they didn’t mind doing that when I asked them. Just before that I was walking around and saw Ramon Sluiter and asked him if I could get a photo. So as of yesterday I’m a retired tennis player groupie LOL.

With Jacco Eltingh

With Ramon Sluiter

With Richard Kraijcek. I said to him “you are so tall”. He answered “well, you’re pretty tall yourself too” 🙂 but I felt quite short next to him.

This is not a tennis player but one of my favorite managers I work for and with

My week in skies:

Tuesday October 2nd

Wednesday October 3rd

Friday October 5th

Workouts:

Yesterday morning I did a workout of The Firm Express. The workouts are short but intense, this one had cardio and sculpt excercises.
Total time: 20 minutes.

This morning I did yogalates. I did 2 workouts of 15 minutes of the DVD: one for the upper body and one for the lower body.
Total time: 31 minutes.

Knitting update:

I started on my sweater. Knitting goes fast because of the bigger needles and the fact that I use 2 or 3 yarns at the same time. I had bought 1 yarn of every color but after knitting this, I already had to buy new yarns of the light grey color.

Friday September 14, 2012: The Mishmash Edition

Daily stuff:

You may (or may not know) I got a new phone last month: the Samsung Galaxy SIII last month. And I’m totally in love with it.

It’s user friendly, it’s fast and there are so much more apps available for Android than for Blackberry. My favorite apps:

Pocketinformant

I used this app on my blackberry to for my appointments and my to do list.

Endomondo Sports Tracker

This one I used on the BB too to record my walks with Bella.

Nexercise

This is a fun app: you track your exercise and get points and medals for everything you do. You can add friends and have a friendly competition to see how you are doing compared to them.

Appie

This is an app from my supermarket. I make my shopping list on the computer or my phone (it synchronizes). Than I can sort the groceries on the walking route of my supermarket and at the supermarket I cross of the list on my phone.

Mindfeud

My latest addiction, kind of Word with Friends or Wordfeud but with symbols and colors. If anyone is playing: let me know.

Songpop

Even more addicted to this than to Mindfeud. I love music and I love playing music games. Again: if you are playing, let me know.

What are your favorite apps for your Iphone or Android. Let me know, maybe you have a great suggestion I can use too.

My news of the week:

  • September 11.
    Never forget!
  • Election day last Wednesday.
Although I don’t like how politics is in my country these days, I did vote on Wednesday. Voting is a right and when you can you have to vote is my opinion.
I have to say that the results were better than I expected and I hope we will have a government soon that will work to get our country out of the recession.

What’s your news of the week?

Workouts:

Yesterday morning a short Yogalates workout, mostly leg work. These are not my favourite workouts but I do them from time to time for the stretching part. But no long than 30 minutes because after that I get bored (tempo is too slow).
Total time 21 minutes.

I did training 2 of week 3 of my 7W25K program this morning. I’m still not feeling a 100% well, this cold just isn’t coming, but I feel better than last Wednesday and was able to do the full training today.

Stats:
Run-walk ratio: 5-2-7-2-7-2-5-2 (24 minutes running, 8 minutes walking)
Weather:dry, cloudy, wind, 12C (53 degrees)
Distance: 4.5 K / 2.8 miles
Time: 00:32:06
Last song on Ipod before finish: Rod Stewart – Maggie May.

Fran’s cook book project:

I have decided to stop with this project. I was so behind that at this point I had to make a recipe from one of my cook books every and that just isn’t going to happen. But that doesn’t mean I stop using my cook books and new recipes. I will keep doing that and post it on my blog.

Wednesday May 16 – 2012, The Workout Edition

Thursday

Yogalates Energizer, lower body. After not feeling too well on Wednesday this was just the workout I need.
Total time: 32 minutes.

Friday

Rest.

Saturday

It’s becoming more a normal thing than an exception: a bad run. I had a wedding the night before, I took it easy on the alcohol but we went to bed late and I was on my feet (high heels) all night. I woke up tired but did go out for a run because the weather was gorgeous. But it didn’t go well, I was tired and my calf was hurting again.

But enough with the excuses. I’m going to take better care of myself and my calf and plan my runs better. If I have a party or something I will plan my run before the party instead of the day after.

Stats:
Weather:dry, sunny, windy, 10C (50 degrees)
Distance: 3.8 K / 2.3 miles
Time: 00:28:49
Average time: 07:35 /km
Average speed: 7.91 km/hour
Last song on Ipod before finish: Michael Jackson – Off the wall

Sunday

Rest

Monday

Chalean time. I did 2 workouts. The first was Burn it off and is a HITT workout. Great workout although I said no to the burpees she offered. Those are so hard (right Shelley?). I still can’t do them. After that I did a workout called Recharge that is a stretch workout for about 20 minutes. So good, I love a good stretch every now and then.
Total time: 47 minutes.

Tuesday

This was taken at 6 am, I love it how light it is during my morning runs now.

Tempo run. Total running time went to 35 minutes this week (last week 30 minutes) and the tempo intervals from 3 to 4 minutes. Today I had to do 1 tempo interval of 4 minutes (next week 2 and so on).
This was a good run! I felt good (except from soreness in my but from Monday’s workout) and my calf didn’t hurt at all. Came home happy!

Stats:
Weather:dry, bit of wind, 8C (46 degrees)
Distance: 5.1 K / 3.1 miles
Time: 00:35:16
Average time: 06:55 /km
Average speed: 8.68 km/hour
Last song on Ipod before finish: Melissa Etheridge – I run for life.

Wednesday

X-TrainFit Cardio. I did some other workouts from this program, that were weight workouts for a particular body part. Today it was just Cardio and I found this workout pretty boring. A lot of the same and all cardio (like jumping jacks, speed skaters, and so on). Since I’m a believer that you have to do something you like otherwise you probably stop doing it, I won’t do this workout again.
Total time: 46 minutes.

Weekly review

I switched my runs this week. Normally I run on Monday and Wednesday but this week on Tuesday and Thursday. This is because tomorrow it’s Ascension Day which is a Christian holiday here in Holland, which means my weekend has already started today. My company is closed on Friday (so is R’s) and we have a 4-day weekend.

Poor Bella, I haven’t walked with her that much. We did short walks everyday but I only “count” the longer walk in a day. I just didn’t feel much like walking, especially not at the weekend. I’ll make it up to her next week.

I want to thank you all for your positive and lovely comments on my Monday post. I still think I made the right decision. Come back on Friday when I reveal my new project that is all about cooking.

Wednesday April 11 – 2012, The workout edition

Thursday

I just couldn’t get out of bed this morning. I kept hitting the snooze button and got up 40 minutes later than I was supposed too. No workout for this reason because I had to get at work in time too.

Friday

Yogalates Original. Because I didn’t run yesterday, I decided to do this workout on my rest day. It was a nice workout for a Friday morning. Focus on spine, abdominals and legs.
Total time: 26 minutes.

Saturday

Yabbadabbadooooooo! My first 10K of this year and a surprisingly good time too. One of my goals is to run 10K < 1.08 and I got close today. I didn’t really want to go and had 2 escape routes, 1 would make it a 4K run and the other about 7K but when I passed the turns I decided to move on. Only 2 walk breaks during this run. This was a great boost for my running confidence.

Stats:
Weather:dry with an occasionally drop of rain, cloudy, bit windy, 6C (42 degrees)
Distance: 10 K / 6.2 miles
Time: 01:08:16
Average time: 06:50 /km
Average speed: 8.8 km/hour
Last song on Ipod before finish: Bonny Tyler – Holding out for a hero.

Sunday

Rest.

Monday

This run wasn’t my best. My legs felt very tired. I really need to stretch or foamroll more after a run. I didn’t stretch enough after Saturday’s run. I also had too much to eat at Sunday’s dinner which bothered me a bit too. A reminder how important it is to eat right. I had to take 2 walk breaks.
But .. always look on the bright side: I went and I ran.

Stats:
Weather:rainy, windy, 9C (48 degrees)
Distance: 5.1 K / 3.1 miles
Time: 00:35:43
Average time: 07:00 /km
Average speed: 8.5 km/hour
Last song on Ipod before finish: Glee Cast – You can’t always get what you want.

Tuesday

P90X, Cardio X. Second time I did a P90X workout and I like it a lot. This workout had a little bit of everything in it: yoga, kenpo, core synergistics. I couldn’t do this program for 3 months, 6 days a week because I would be bored after a week. But as a part of my complete DVD collection I love it.
Total time: 43 minutes.

Wednesday

Unplanned rest day. Like Thursday, I kept hitting the snooze button on my alarm clock and by the time I finally got up, it was to late to go for a run.

Weekly review

Not my best week but I’m okay with it. I’ve been tired the past few weeks. I often have that in Spring (and in Autumn) and it will pass again and my energy will be back.

Wednesday March 21 – 2012, The workout edition

Thursday

Yogalates workout focussed on the upper body. These workouts are great to add to the other workouts because they are not as hard as the other which is nice for a change.
Total time: 28 minutes.

Friday
Rest.

Saturday
I didn’t feel like running on Saturday and I gave in to it. But I didn’t sit on the couch. I worked in the garden for 2 hours and walked with Bella.

Sunday
Rest.

Monday

It was cold, freezing cold, didn’t really expect that and I didn’t wear my thermo clothing but after about 10 minutes I was warmed up and it didn’t bother me anymore. Slow run but a very good one, it went smoothly. Intervals: 11:1

Stats:
Weather:cold, fog, not much wind, 0C (32 degrees)
Distance: 5 K / 3.1 miles
Time: 00:35:16
Average time: 07:03 /km
Average speed: 8.5 km/hour
Last song on Ipod before finish: Glee Cast – Love Shack

Tuesday

Chalean Extreme push circuit 3. Weights workout focussed on legs and chest. I used a heavier weight for the first time: 6 lbs (3 kg). For some of you that’s a baby weight, for me it’s a step forward. I’m definitely feeling it. But also in my legs and I won’t use heavy weights for my legs anymore. My legs are super strong and I don’t want soreness because it can interfer with my runs.
I also did 10 wall push ups. As of this week I’m working towards a full push up and start with wall push ups.
Total time: 32 minutes.

Wednesday

I wasn’t feeling well Tuesday night. I was tired and I felt weird. I was in bed before 10 pm which never happens. When the alarm went off this morning, I was tempted to stay in bed but decided I would go out for a run and see what would happen. I could always make it shorter. And so I did and I did make it a bit shorter than I had planned. It wasn’t that bad at all, I felt pretty good. Intervals: 13:1.

Stats:
Weather:dry, some wind, 4C (39 degrees)
Distance: 3.2 K / 2 miles
Time: 00:22:14
Average time: 06:57 /km
Average speed: 8.6 km/hour
Last song on Ipod before finish: Frank Stallone – Far from over

Weekly review

I missed two workouts last week but I’m okay with that. It’s okay to miss a workout or two every now and then. Overall I’m doing pretty well so far this year with my exercise.

I did decide however to add a few extra rest days to my schedule which means there will be weeks where I workout 6 days and other weeks 5 days. I don’t want to overtrain myself and I’ve noticed this past 3 months I need an extra rest day every now and then.

Wednesday February 22 – 2012, The workout edition

Thursday
Thursday = short workout day. The Firm Express, it’s only 20 minutes but the tempo is high, no rest between exercises. This one had a combination of cardio and weights.
Total time: 20 minutes.

Friday
Planned active rest day. Spend the morning cleaning my house and took a walk with Bella in the afternoon.

Saturday
Now that it isn’t that cold anymore I don’t have any excuse to skip runs. And I didn’t. It was a tough run though because the hard wind almost blow me off the road sometimes. My time is a bit slower than usual too because I had to run against the wind a few times. I did 5:1 intervals on this run and I felt great afterwards. Now my goal is to continue running 3 times a week.

Stats:
Weather:dry with an occasional drop of rain, strong wind, 7C (44 degrees)
Distance: 8 K / 5 miles
Time: 00:58:05
Average time: 07:16 /km
Average speed: 8.3 km/hour
Last song on Ipod before finish: Michael Jackson – P.Y.T.

Sunday
Short run on my schedule. It was sunny but I did get some hail during my run. Also the roads were icy and I had to be careful not to slip. Because of that it was a not so fast run but I’d rather be slow than fall and get injured. Did 6:1 intervals.

Stats:
Weather:dry, a bit of hail, not much wind, 3C (37 degrees)
Distance: 4 K / 2.5 miles
Time: 00:27:47
Average time: 06:57 /km
Average speed: 8.6 km/hour
Last song on Ipod before finish: Bruce Springsteen – Waiting on a sunny day.

Monday
My first P90X workout: core synergistics and I loved it! A lot of push ups which I do the girly way. I still can’t do a full push up but I keep on trying. What I like about the Beachbody programs is that you see in the screen how much time the exercise is and it counts down, so is the total workout time. If I get tired during an exercise and see it’s only 20 more seconds I push through.
Total time: 56 minutes.

Tuesday
Went out for a morning run. The weather was good and it wasn’t too cold. The run was good, not much to say about this one. Did 6:1 intervals.

Stats:
Weather:dry, some wind, 3C (37 degrees)
Distance: 4.5 K / 2.8 miles
Time: 00:31:00
Average time: 06:53 /km
Average speed: 8.7 km/hour
Last song on Ipod before finish: Robbie Williams – Lovelight.

Wednesday
Yogalates total body toner abdominals. This was a boring workout. Half of it were breathing exercises which is good but not for too long. It didn’t feel like a workout at all and I won’t be doing this particular workout again. The DVD has 3 more other workouts and I hope they will be better.
Total time: 25 minutes.

Weekly review
Excellent workout week, I didn’t skip workouts, sticked to my workout plan. Very happy with this.

I’ve switched my Sunday run and my Monday workout because I don’t really like running 2 days in a row. And because of that I have skipped my Sunday run too often in the past weeks. I will be running on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. I started doing this so that I wouldn’t have to run in the dark twice a week. But now that it’s not that cold anymore I don’t really mind. And besides it will be light in the morning in a couple of weeks.

Wednesday February 8 – 2012, The workout edition

Thursday
Ultimate Yogalates workout. Yogalates is a combination of yoga and Pilates exercises and I like this more than a regular yoga workout which bores me easily.
Total time: 22 minutes.

Friday
Active rest day. Active because I cleaned my house in the morning, walked with Bella in the snow for 40 minutes in the afternoon and cleaned the driveway for 30 minutes.

Saturday
I had a run planned but skipped it. I went out with Bella in the morning and my face almost froze and I was outside for just 10 minutes. I’ll sit this cold weather out and will run again when it’s less cold.

Sunday
Rest day.

Monday
Recovery week is over, back to 3 weeks of full training. Started this Monday with a X-Trainfit workout, completely focussed on the legs. Great workout.
Total time: 53 minutes.

Tuesday
The Firm Bootcamp maximum calorie burn. Great workout, combination of 3 plyometric sessions and 3 cardio sessions with some abs exercises at the end.
Total time: 51 minutes.

Wednesday
After checking the weather several times a day, Tuesday night would be less cold than the other nights this week and I knew that if I wanted to run this week it had to be this morning. And so I did.
It wasn’t that cold except when I got outside the village where there was more wind. I took and out and back route on a bike path that was clean. The sidewalks and a lot of roads (the street where I live f.e.) aren’t snow free. I had a 30 minute run planned and that’s what I did. After 2 days with lots of legs exercises my legs felt surprisingly well. It was a good run.

Stats:
Weather:dry, some wind wind, -2C (28 degrees)
Distance: 4.4 K / 2.7 miles
Time: 00:30:29
Average time: 06:56 /km
Average speed: 8.5 km/hour
Last song on Ipod before finish: Lady Gaga – Hair.

Weekly review
I didn’t run the 2 runs I had planned last week because of the cold weather. Also last week was a recovery week meaning less workouts. But I picked it up again on Monday and am very pleased with my workouts the past 3 days.
