Monday June 25, 2012: The Mishmash Edition

Daily stuff:

Thank you all for your sweet and lovely comments on my Italy posts. And thank you for the compliments of how I look. I do feel good in my body and despite all the great food we had I even lost a little weight on vacation because we walked a lot every day. But …. when we were on vacation I made the decision that I want to lose weight till I’m at goal weight. Two things happened on vacation which made me decide this, one of them is a sad reason.

Tuscany has hills, most of the towns are on those hills and streets can be steep. We had to climb a lot (good exercise for my calfs). We noticed a lot of older people that were overweighted and couldn’t walk very good anymore. They had to stay below because they couldn’t walk up to the towns and missed a lot because of that. We said to each other that we want to be able to do as much as possible when we are old and the best way to accomplish that is by living healthy, have a healthy weight and move enough.

I don’t know if you know it but I have a sister. She’s 4 years younger than me. We don’t have much contact because we are very different persons. I’m okay with it and she’s okay with it. But she is my sister and I have had bad news from her when we were on vacation.

My mother had 4 brothers. Three of them had a muscle disease and all died between the age of 45 and 60.  It’s this disease:

Myotonic dystrophy (dystrophia myotonica, myotonia atrophica) is a chronic, slowly progressing, highly variable, inherited multisystemic disease. It is characterized by wasting of the muscles (muscular dystrophy), cataracts, heart conduction defects, endocrine changes, and myotonia.

It’s genetic but the rest of the family had no signs of it. Till now. We are waiting for the final test results but it’s almost certain that my sister has the disease too. It’s incurable and it can’t be said how the disease will progress for her. Symptoms can be that it is noted in face and jaw muscles, the drooping of the eyelids, weakness of the neck muscles, hands and lower legs.

My sister has lost about 30 kg (66 lbs) over the past 2 years but still is heavier than I am. Her doctor said she can’t gain anymore weight now because of the disease.

The doctor asked about her parents and her sister and when my sister told her that I was a runner, the doctor said that changes are very small I have it because if I do, I couldn’t be a runner.

I’m not worried I have it but decided it’s better for my health if I have a healthy weight and that’s why I want to lose weight (about 8 kg / 17 lbs.). I’ll start working on it next week because we still have vacation this week.

Back to normal and happier things. Last Saturday I went with R. to one of his motor races. A long day because we left at 6 am and were home at 8 pm. It was a bit cold because of the hard wind but at least it was dry. Below a few pics of my motor hero.

Of course miss Bella came with us

Number 11 is R.

Book I’m reading

John Grisham
The Associate
Finished it on vacation

Karen Rose
Silent Scream
Finished it on vacation. As usual another great book by Karen Rose.

E.L. James
Fifty Shades of Grey
Finished it on vacation. I have to say I wasn’t very impressed with this book but … I am going to read the other 2 because I want to know how the story ends.

George R.R. Martin
A Game of Thrones, book one of a Song of Fire and Ice
Finished this yesterday. I didn’t expect it but I love it and the best part: there are 6 more books in this serie.

TV shows I watched last week

Mad Men, Downton Abbey, Touch, Once upon a time, King.

Have a lot of catching up to do on shows I recorded during our vacation.

Cross Stitching

This is what I worked on this weekend: Nefertiti.
I have finished ¾ of this work but still a lot to do before it’s finished.

This is how it will look once it's finished.

  1. I am very sorry to hear about your sister Fran, that is sad news. I think I too want to keep trying to lose a few more lbs. because of my family’s genetics and medical history. I want to change how the story ends.

  2. Fran, I am so sorry to hear the bad news about your sister. It must be devastating for her and for the whole family. I can only hope that she gets the best possible prognosis and care. And good for you for taking this as a wake up call and getting proactive about your own health. I wish your sister and you all the best!

  3. I am very sorry about your sister.

The older I get the more I make decisions for health. I realize that there no guarantees in life, but I think by being at a good weight and in good shape, we can maximize our chances.

Enjoy the rest of your vacation!

  4. I’m so very sorry to hear about your sister. That’s got to be very tough on all of you. I hope she gets the best care possible.

Ok, I am going to admit that I am reading 50 Shades–holy moly, right? It’s so poorly written but it’s hard to resist!

  5. I am sorry about your sister. You are right that the best thing you can do is live as healthy as you can so that you can enjoy old age.

I want to read Game of Thrones. I don’t care about 50 Shades because I heard it was twilight fan fic and I hated those books and never finished the series (sorry!!!).

  6. That is rough news about your sister – I’m sorry it’s happening to her and I hope it won’t happen to you. You and R. had the same epiphany that Jeff and I did not too long ago, that we don’t want to be “those people” who are too out of shape (and overweight) to do things. So yes, that might mean smaller portions on our meals, and waking up early to exercise, but the trade-off is well worth it! 🙂

  7. late to this but expressing my sorry as well.

    you and r
    shelley and Jeff
so far here just me 🙂
it’s all worth it to live longer.

    xoxo

  8. Sorry to hear about your sister. Stay healthy! You are right about being able to do things as we age. I am always surprised at how hard it is for some people to get around. I never want to be that way if I can help it.
ANd I liked your comment on my blog to stop comparing myself to others. You are right. It will do me no good in the triathlon world. I am sure I will still do it some but I am going to try to remember your advice.

  9. Hej zussie,

    Dikke tuut,

    Simone

  10. That is very sad news about your sister. I wish her all the best and hopefully she stays as healthy as she can for as long as possible.

You are right about being in shape to enjoy life. There are things I can’t do because I am so heavy…but I continue to work at it.

    Hugs Fran!

  11. I can just imagine your sisters emotions hearing this news….my heart breaks for her. When I was diagnosed with MS ( and no cure either ) my world fell apart….then I decided to fight, which is what I am doing. I pray she will fight as well.
I’m fit but do find the hills tough as well, so can imagine being older and walking them – I think ones body gets used to certain things, so if you walk the hills daily it is easy no matter what your age. I notice this with different fitness classes as well. It’s about muscle memory.
I was told to buy the 50 shades of grey by a friend back in SA and all the comments I’ve read online, Facebook and newspaper says its a great book ( soft porn ) it has spiked my interest, but have so much to do Photography wise I can’t get pulled away right now. But it’s on my list to buy!

  12. I’m sorry to hear about your sister Fran. Even if you are not close it is still hard to hear something like that about your family.

Paige and I discovered Downton Abbey this past winter and were instantly hooked. We are anxiously awaiting season three. Where are you in the seasons?

Congrats on not gaining while on vacation. That’s so great! And I can’t wait to hear about yourn

  13. Your plan to lose the 17 lbs.

Sorry for the broken up comment. iPhone is a pain for commenting!

  14. Sorry to hear about your sister.
I bet Bella enjoys tagging along to events like the motor race.
My husband reads the game of thrones books. I would consider it but they are so long I think it would take me forever to get through one. I am a super slow, distracted reader.
    That cross stitch looks awesome.

  15. I’m so sorry to hear about your sister, I also do not have much of a relationship with my sister, well actually none, but it would still be quite upsetting if she had a severe medical problem. It’s hard when you’re not close, isn’t it? Always a struggle for me. Your cross stitch is amazing – it looks like a painting!

  16. So sorry to hear about your Sister Fran. 😦

Your photos from the motor race look like it was a fun activity! So green and bella looked like she was a happy pup.
